This engine (1.5) is pinging @ low speeds with Super. Only noticed it last night driving with the windows down. I wonder if the Ignition Timing is mapped different for the 1.5 JDM's. I don't think Japan uses RON 92.

Still pinging @ very low speeds with both super & premium. I wonder if it has to do with the CVT ratios.

^^34K....done nothing with it except changed the air filter (OEM) & oil. Just run redline cleaner twice so far. Never cleaned injectors nor changed plugs. Did alot of research on the net & all I can come up with is JDM's run higher compression & Japan sells high octane gas so I'll monitor.

Car idles very smooth & runs great. Don't want to clean T/body as its electronic.

There is no harm in cleaning the throttle body, i clean my own every 5000km most likely this is not the cause of the pinging but you will feel a difference in throttle response and power.

I also use the redline fuel system cleaner BUT to get the most out of the bottle run the tank to the last quarter and throw in the entire bottle and drive the car untill the fuel light comes. when you are in the gas station throw in another bottle of redline and full up the tank.

The OEM platinum plugs dont last more than 60,000km on the tiida, ive seen it many times with other owners that keep trying to push the plugs longer than 60k and then the car starts to misfire in low rpm and after 3900 rpm when the vvl engages the misfiring gets considerably worse.

It's also possible that maybe Chemical has badly gapped plugs or the wrong heat ragne in his car - remember somebody MUST have serviced it back in Japan...and an error could be made!

My old man is using Super in his Tiida after a short stint on premium only - still no complaints. Drove it myself, no signs of pinging.

^^Very true Alpha, I would have checked this already but

1) you have to take out the intake manifold which is straight forward but to don't know if you have to replace the manifold gasket :?:

2) these plugs supposed to be long life oem iridium plugs good for apporx 150k hence my reason not for checking them.

I don't know if there is a bit of carbon build up as I only do 150km / week !

The intake manifold gasket is a synthetic rubber gasket that is reusable, no need to worry about this.

The plugs on the other hand should be checked as i said before they dont last as long as they suppost to, the OEM platinum plugs are the best performing plugs for the HR engine, youll never know what the previous owner put in there unless u check it yourself

If it is carbon you suspect there is an easy was to solve this, spray a fine mist of water into the throttle body while the car is idling ( if you can get someone to rev for you while you spray its better so the engine wont stall ) the water will turn to steam in the combustion chamber and the steam will take the carbon off the plugs, combustion chamber faces of the valves and the walls of the exhaust ports.

( DONT use excessive water like a garden hose PLEASE) you'll hydraulic the engine resulting in a bent connecting rod

^^seafoam FTW instead? Can't see "carbon" being the cause though.

Chemical - not sure but I'd have any related gaskets handy just in case. Should be able to be sourced form N&M - same engine in the 1.5 Sylphy.

Eh? AFAIK, my AD wagon used 4x100 wheels, and those wheels fit on the Tiida just fine. Also, the Y11 wingorad used 4x114 wheels, and those didn't fit.

^But the car I speak of (my dad's Tiida) is a JDM RORO. Early '05 though :? You sure maybe you don't have a SDM 1.6L or something there that you ain't telling us about? :D

Seafoam.....I just threw that out there after seeing it online. Never came across it locally!!!

^Nah, its an 08 JDM RORO cause I brought it in myself with the help of a friend. Its the HR15de with Xtronic T/mission.

I wonder if the lower end Tiida (fabric interior with no centre arm rest) is the 4X100 as mine has centre arm rest, fogs, electronic AC, HID lights with adjustment etc.

Put down the windows in your dad's car & move off very slowly, don't cross 40km & lightly touch the gas pedal while going up a street & see if its pinging slightly. I never heard this in the cabin before until I put down my glass one night.

^^His car is the "higher end" model, which has HID's, climate control (digital AC thing), foot-well mounted e-brake "pedal", CVT, etc etc.

I'm not anywhere near his car atm..so when next I get a chance, I'll see what I can find out w.r.t pinging. Admittedly I never drove the car with the window down.

One other thing I forget to mention is the JDM Tiidas run CR @ 10.5:1 which is very high. They do this cause domestic car engines are smaller (1.5 as opposed to 1.6 & 1.8 ) resulting in a bit more power output coupled with lower emissions.

I'll email Sayuri & SBT Japan today to find out what is the recommended fuel for this car.

^^Ok WRT pinging remember I did nothing with this car since I bought it. I sprayed the TB with Amsoil power foam & manually moved the butterfly to clean etc.

There was alot of crap came out of the TB. I was amazed. When I started the car it was ideling @ 2000 RPM....Disconnected the Batt but same prob.

Went by the mechanic , he has the OBDII carman brand, plugged it in & on the inside of the hood there is a sticker that says BTDC 7 degrees @ 700RPM.

He brought down the RPM to the 700 & BINGO no more pinging. I think the car's timing was off since it came from Japan.

I'm running Super 92 RON with no problems. I called Crism , they have a chart WRT octane requirements & the guy told me it states for the Tiida 1.5 use min 89 RON.

70% of gas sales in Japan are "REGULAR" WHICH IS AROUND 90 - 91 RON.

Are you sure about that Knight1 as i should get mine next Friday (RORO). I thought in Japan they use 98 min ron @ the pumps.
This is an 07 top of the line version. Do you know if this will come with the Xtronic CVT t/mission?

YES they can. Here's a crappy snapshot of the owner's manual:

Image

HR15DE = 1.5 L = 91 OCTANE MIN (for the model with three way cat...which is the JDM version). Super leaves our Bond at 92 octane.

HR16DE = 1.6L = 95 OCTANE MIN (aka premium).

Hey, can you tell me what's the rest of info under the last few lines in the diagram please.

So YES. The 1.5 CAN use 92 RON octane. That's because that engine is a "world" engine also (sold in external markets). The 1.6L strangely enough, is not sold in the JDM market on the Tiida bodystyle.

If it's the high grade tiida, chances are it has the digital climate control A/C, and light sensing HID headlights.

An easy way to know whether it's CVT or not would be:

1) Normal auto should be PRND21 - CVT has PRNDL

2) You'd obviously feel no gear changes.

3) The dipstick should have the type of fluid (NS-2) marked on it somewhere.

Overall, I find the CVT on the Tiida ALOT more responsive that the original Hyper CVT's, like I what I had on my old P11 Primera.
