Flooded Car Procedure!

Postby FullStop » October 23rd, 2018, 7:51 am

Hi folks, here are a few things to do/check before attempting to start your flooded out car. These are just the basics.

-Do Not attempt to start a flooded vehicle!

-Disconnect the battery(negative terminal first)

-After the water has gone down
-Check Engine Oil For water
-Check Transmission Fluid For water(for toyota CVT transmissions, you may need to remove the transmission pan)

-If water is found, replace contaminated fluids and filters

-Using a spare piece of hose long enough to get to the bottom of your fuel tank, siphon fluid from the fuel tank and check for water, gasoline floats on water, so its necessary to get to the bottom of the tank.

-Drain tank if water is found, fuel tank will need to be flushed and cleaned before attempting to start the vehicle.
Fuel Pump and filter will also need to be cleaned if water is found in tank.

-Remove the air filter and check for water in the intake and air filter housing.
-If water is found, remove the necessary component and drain water.

-Most electrical components and connectors are sealed; never remove connectors and components until they are completely dry externally, in this way preventing water and moisture ingress.Where possible, clean all connectors with electrical contact cleaner.

Good info bro.
dealing with 2 flooded vehicles atm.

Both got about 4” water inside.

1 was started and seems to be fine.
Oil clean
Tranny clean
Hopefully the diffs clean.
Brakes a bit squeaky still

The other had no key in but we found it with the radio on.
So i just disconnect the battery poles for now....
Not sure how to move forward

disconnect the battery, vacuum out all water from the interior of the car, start removing connectors around the ecu and footwell after everything is very dry, clean with wd40 electrical contact cleaner or crc electrical contact cleaner.

I'm fairly certain that this means the WD40 or CRC brand of electrical contact cleaner.
