Repeated coil pack failures on a 2k5 fielder

Postby Mosaic » November 16th, 2017, 10:19 pm

Hi every month or so one of the coil packs dies, different ones.

I am considering doing the following sequence and evaluating.
1) A grounding kit
2) Replacing coil pack connectors
3) replacing the ignition control module (maybe it's keeping the coil packs on start mode during run resulting in higher voltage to the packs)

Any other advice?
thx

BTW:
Here is a complete resource on the different types of coil packs and their wiring (2,3,4 wire)
http://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/cgi/viewcon ... =auto_pres

Also a wireless coil pack, spark voltage, spark duration and tachometer testing device.

try checking the ignition module. thats the only common thing to all 4 spark plug coils and since they take turns blowing every mth...try looking for the common factor.

also no check engine light ??

did u get the car scanned??

Yeah car has been scanned multiple times, no check light.
The ICM might be running too much dwell time and saturating the coil packs causing heating. In effect START mode (Low voltage cranking needs more dwell) is active all the time instead of RUN ( 14.4V needs less dwell to charge the coil) mode.
Only slapping on an O'Scope and comparing the dwell/spark sequence to another fielder can really evaluate that.

Since we have a warm climate I might be able to get by with a small ohm resistor in the 12V coil pack ign feed to reduce coil pack loading, rather than an ICM replacement.

Ok check Ryotech performance his scan tool has a built in oscilloscope and can do (multiple) wave form parameter analysis.....
he should also be able to pin point ur issue....

worth the $200....IMHO

What's the mileage on this vehicle? Is it varying coilpacks?
